Philly Cheesesteak Sloppy Joes are a quick and easy 30 minute weeknight meal featuring ground beef in a gooey, creamy sauce with peppers and onions, topped with more cheese and baked to golden, melted perfection.

Philly Cheesesteak Sloppy Joes

Philly Cheesesteak Sloppy Joes are a super easy weeknight meal, made in just 30 minutes with very simple ingredients. These toasty gooey Philly Cheesesteak Sloppy Joes are easier and cheaper than the traditional sandwich but with the same meaty, cheesy, comfort food flavor.

These Philly Cheesesteak Sloppy Joes feature ground beef in a creamy, cheesy sauce with sauteed onions and peppers. The meat mixture is piled high on buns and topped with more cheese then baked to gooey, melted perfection.

The best part about cheesesteaks is everything obviously. But truly, I just can't get enough of all that gooey cheese. I wanted to make sure every ounce of that gooey goodness carried over into this recipe, and I think I did it justice.

What is on a Traditional Philly Cheesesteak?

I had the pleasure of visiting Philly this summer, and when we ordered Philly cheesesteaks, you had just a couple of options regarding toppings.

You could choose cheez whiz, which is the yellow cheese sauce, or provolone for cheese, and choose your sandwich with or without sauteed onions. So you if you order "one whiz with," you just ordered a Philly cheesesteak with cheez whiz and onions. If you order "two provolone without," you just ordered two cheesesteaks with provolone and no onions.

Some places offer the option of bell peppers or mushrooms, but these aren't necessary nor are they considered authentic. That being said, feel free to omit the pepper from this recipe or add mushrooms.

What Bread Should I Use?

I suggest using a sturdy bun, as this is a messy dish. French dinner rolls work well for this. Some more options include potato buns, sour dough buns, or even fresh bakery sandwich buns.

Variations for Philly Cheesesteak Sloppy Joes

Here are some ways to change up this recipe and make it your own.

  • "Cheez Whiz": Add about 4 ounces processed cheese product (Velveeta) or deli-cut American cheese to the skillet with the cream cheese and broth for that extra cheez-whiz flavor.
  • Cheese: You can change the provolone with sliced American cheese for the cheez whiz feel and flavor.
  • Peppers: Feel free to omit these, as they're not truly authentic to the experience.
  • Mushroom: Mushrooms can be added to this to help add some bulk to the meal.
  • Beans: Beans are another great way of stretching a meal, adding both protein and fiber. With so much other flavor going on in the dish, you will likely barely notice them!
  • Ground Beef: Obviously, you'd be losing some of that beefy, authentic flavor, but ground turkey will work in a pinch here.

This dish is really easy to serve up, and I like to keep the sides as simple as possible too! Here are some of our favorite, most loved ideas:

  • Potato chips: Doesn't get easier or more classic than this!
  • French fries
  • Tater tots

Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 large onion diced
  • 1 large green bell pepper chopped
  • 2 garlic cloves minced
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • ½ cup beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 4 ounces cream cheese
  • Salt to taste
  • 6 buns or rolls for serving
  • 6 slices white American cheese or Provolone cheese

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350°F.
  • In a large skillet over medium-high heat, brown ground beef with onion, pepper, and garlic. When browned, drain grease. Add back to the skillet.
  • In a small bowl, combine cornstarch with beef broth. Pour mixture into the beef.
  • Add in Worcestershire and pepper. Stir to combine.
  • Stir in cream cheese until smooth.
  • Add salt to taste. Remove from heat.
  • Lay out 6-8 buns on a baking sheet. Scoop mixture onto the bottoms of 6 buns. Top with a slice of cheese. Bake to melt the cheese, about 5 minutes. Top with the top bun, and serve warm!

Notes

  • If you want to stretch the filling a little further (like if you have a bigger family, like us!), add 8 ounces of finely chopped mushrooms. They're meaty like ground beef, and won't alter the flavor too much.
  • Salt: Salt is added last as cream cheese can sometimes be a little salty. Add it at the end, and taste test.
  • Storage: Store remaining filling covered in the refrigerator for up to 3-5 days.
  • Freezer Directions: After preparing filling, allow to cool to room temperature. Transfer to a freezer bag or container. Freeze for up to 3-6 months. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator. Reheat on the stove before assembling sloppy joes.
