6 Places to Find Free or Cheap Canning Jars

Canning is a wonderful way to make the most of your produce and build up your food supply. If you are preparing to can, you might notice how pricey those glass canning jars can be. The good news is, there are ways to find them for cheap, and even free. Take a look below at 6 places to find free or cheap canning jars so you can get your canning on for less.

6 Places to Find Free or Cheap Canning Jars

1. Thrift stores.

You will be amazed at how many canning jars you can find at thrift stores, often times for as little as a quarter. Browse local thrift stores for glass jars in clean, damage-free shape. If you don’t see any, some stores have a wish list where you can leave your name and they can call you if some come in.

2. Online classifieds.

I often run across people getting rid of canning supplies on social media sale sites. You can look on local Facebook selling groups or sites like Craigslist to see what sort of canning offerings might be waiting for you.

3. Garage sales.

It seems like canning jars are a staple of every garage sale. It's worth keeping your eyes out for canning jars as well as other canning supplies when visiting garage sales and especially estate sales, which are often times held at the homes of older men and women who once canned regularly.

4. Your own recycling bin.

Don’t toss out those glass jars! As long as they can be cleaned and sterilized and are in good shape, they can be used again. Consider looking through your own recyclables for jars that can be used in canning.

5. Dollar stores.

Most dollar stores are carrying canning jars these days in various sizes. Some even have the chalkboard label on them.

6. ASK!

I am amazed at how many people have canning jars in their own garages and basements. It is always worth putting the word out to see if anyone has canning jars you can use. You can always trade them some finished product in exchange for their jars, which most people would love!

Remember, while jars can be used numerous times, lids can only be used once since they can only be sealed once. You can grab new lids HERE from Amazon for pretty cheap.

Give these tips for where to find cheap and free canning jars a try and see how much you can save on your canning.

I just discovered your blog tonight while looking for cheap canning jars. Your article has some great ideas on where to find them, thank you! (I also wrote down your recipe for flaky pie crust.) BUT, here's my question about reusing our own glass jars. How is it safe to reuse the same lids if real canning lids which are new aren't the right size for the jars?
