7 Tips for Hosting a Rocking Family Game Night

Having a family game night is a great way to spend time together, and have fun. A game night doesn’t take a lot of extra effort and is affordable. Depending on the age of your children having games that they can understand and play is important. No matter what age, you can involve the whole family. Here are 7 tips for hosting a rocking family game night.

7 Tips for Hosting a Rocking Family Game Night

1.  Have a theme night

Kids love to have theme nights. You can have a camping theme and make tents in the living room, play games and tell stories. Another fun theme night is fairy tale night where everyone dresses as their favorite fairy tale character and play games related to fairy tales. It can be board games or games you make up to correspond with the specific theme. You can even have snacks that relate to the theme, like roasted hot dogs and smores for camping night.

2.  No electronics

This is a biggie. Everyone has to turn off their phones and gadgets. It's important that you don’t have interruptions, and show your family that they are your priority by giving them your full attention. It is much easier to keep everyone involved and excited about the games if they aren’t texting their friends while you check your email.

3.  Have teams and make it a competition

Kids are naturally competitive. Making teams and competing against each other is sure to be a crowd-pleaser. Keep a scoreboard, and assign points for each activity. At the end of the night tally the points, and see who the winners are.

4.  Chose a different person to “host” each game night

Letting each family member plan and host game night will get everyone involved. Your kids will love being in charge and using their creativity.

5.  Change the rules for an old favorite game

Changing the rules to an old favorite game is a fun way to change up the routine. Just be sure to write the new rules on a chalkboard or dry erase board, so that everyone will remember and no one can argue that you changed to rules to something else.

6.  Make up your own competitions

It is fun to make up silly competitions and see who will win. Kids enjoy coming up with their own ideas for games. It is sure to be an interesting night. Stand on one leg the longest or epic Simon says. Just have fun and be silly together!

7.  Take the games outside

Playing outdoor games is another great way to change things up. As the weather gets warm outside, it’s important to get the kids out, jumping and running. Games like badminton, corn hole, or croquet are fun games families can play together outside. They help get everyone moving and enjoying the nice weather outside.

It doesn’t take a lot of planning to have a weekly family game night. With some creativity and imagination, you can have different game nights, and not fall into a rut of playing the same games each week. Or worse yet, miss out on a fun weekly chance to bond all together! Your kids will appreciate the efforts you put in. Plus, they will have great family memories of all the fun and silly game nights you had together as a family.
