Don't Toss it! Fix it! 7 Simple Fixes for Clothing Damage - Instead of tossing damaged clothes, save money and resources by fixing them! Use these 7 simple fixes for clothing damage to get the most out of all of your clothes!

Don't Toss It, Fix It: 7 Simple Fixes for Clothing Damage

If you experience a clothing tear or a busted button, your first instinct might be to toss the clothing item and buy something new. But the truth is, most clothing wear-and-tear can be fixed, and you don’t have to be a seamstress to do so. This is a great way to stretch your clothing budget! Take a look below at 7 simple fixes for clothing damage, so you can fix your clothing items instead of sending them to the trash.

7 Easy Fixes for Clothing Damage

1. Try hemming tape - If your pants are too long, try hemming tape to shorten them. This type of tape can be peeled and stuck to the bottom of the pants and then with the heat from an iron, melted into place. It is an easy, no sew way to shorten pants that anyone with an iron can do. Grab some hemming tape HERE from Amazon.

2. Replacing a button is just a few stitches away - Replacing a button is one of the easiest things to do! If you are nervous you can find tutorials on YouTube, and just snag a sewing kit from your local dollar store or a simple one HERE from Amazon. A few basic stitches and a quick tie on the back of the piece of clothing and your button will be secure.

3. Iron on patches can help with holes - If you have a clothing item with a hole, a simple iron on patch can help cover it. Patches are made to match the item and can be sewn on underneath to look discreet. Or, you can opt for a decorative patch that is ironed over the hole and covers it completely, adding embellishment in the process.  We use these denim patches to reinforce or fix our rough-and-rowdy boys' jeans, and I love these plaid iron-on patches for decorative ones.

4. Keep a pre-treater on hand for stains - Always keep stain treating wipes on hand so you can treat stains as they happen. This is one of the easiest ways to prevent stains from setting in, especially if you don’t have quick access to a washing machine. Try a pre-treating stick or wipes in your purse or car for easy access.  You can buy stain treating wipes HERE from Amazon or a pre-treating stick HERE.

5. Try gently burning off frays. Never snip them.  If you notice a fray, never pull the thread as it will only make it worse. Instead take a match and light it, then blow it out. Take the hot end of the match and press it to the fray. It should burn the thread down (especially if it is synthetic) and stop further tearing.

6. A little wax can fix a zipper. Do you have a stuck zipper? Try rubbing a piece of candle wax on it. This can help lubricate the zipper and make zipping it up and down easier. Should you need to repair a zipper, you will find some easy tutorials on YouTube that even the most sewing-challenged person can follow.  Here's a video about how to fix a zipper on YouTube to get you started.

7. Fix faded clothing with dye.  Rit dye can be used to dye clothing that has become dull or faded. Dying directions on the box are fairly easy to follow, and can turn any piece of clothing into something new. Rit down has been around for decades, and is a great way to perk up pieces that may have experienced fading due to washing or sun damage. Grab some in almost any color HERE from Amazon or from Walmart or your nearest craft store.

Are you ready to fix your clothing items instead of tossing it out? Consider these 7 simple fixes for clothing damage and see how simple it can be.
