Natural Remedies for Kitchen Pests

With warm weather comes pests. Whether it's gnats or ants, you may be ready to break out the poison. But before you do, why not consider some natural remedies? It might be a bit of vinegar and baking soda or even peppermint oil. Whatever method you choose, you can get rid of kitchen pests naturally with these 6 Natural Remedies for Kitchen Pests.

6 Natural Remedies for Kitchen Pests

1. Keep Fruits and Vegetables in the Fridge

To prevent gnats from taking up residence in your kitchen, always keep your fruits and vegetables in the refrigerator, or at least covered (Check out these bug covers for fruit or vegetables you need to leave out).  You also want to take out your trash regularly, especially if you have fruit and vegetable peels in the bag.

2. Use Storage Containers

Another prevention method is to use storage containers to box up any opened food containers. When ants don't have a delicious smell to attract them, they are less likely to show up in your kitchen. Also, no matter how closed you think a package may be, ants can still get inside, so store foods in plastic or glass containers instead of their original packaging.

3. Clean Your Kitchen Drains to Prevent Gnats

If your kitchen is home to gnats, you want to focus on hitting gnats where they live and lay their eggs. This is usually in dark, moist places. The kitchen drain is the perfect spot. All you need to do to hit the gnats where they live is to pour baking soda down the drain and then pour in white vinegar. The two will react causing a reaction that will bubble up and smother the gnats and clear out the eggs. Do this before bed and do not run water down the drain for several hours. This ensures that the mixture has a chance to do its job.

4. Trap Gnats with Apple Cider Vinegar

Another great trick to get rid of gnats is to fill a jar half full with apple cider vinegar, cover with plastic wrap, and poke small holes in the top. The gnats will be attracted to the smell of the vinegar and fly into the jar through the small holes. However, they won't be able to fly back out. You'll want to change the vinegar regularly to get rid of the dead gnats.

5. Deter Ants with Peppermint Oil

If ants are a problem in your kitchen, you can use peppermint oil. Ants hate the smell of peppermint oil. Soak a cotton ball in the oil and place in areas where ants are entering the home. You want to make sure your dogs and kids can't get a hold of the cotton ball. You can also mix peppermint oil with water in a spray bottle and spray your kitchen with the mixture to deter ants.

6. Draw a Chalk Line to Keep Ants Out

Another simple tip is to draw a chalk line where the ants are entering the home. Ants will not cross a chalk line and this couldn't be easier to do. You'll need to redraw the line frequently if the ants are entering through a high-traffic area.

You don't have to spray your home with chemicals in order to get rid of the pests. These natural methods are so easy to use and work really, really well.
