12 Indoor Rainy Day Activities for Kids

1.  Reading corner: Is there anything more fun as an adult than being snuggled up with a good book? Create the ultimate reading corner for your kids. Complete with a comfy chair and plenty of good books.

2.  Kid friendly baking: If you have the patience of a saint and are looking for an indoor activity for kids, then consider kid friendly baking. Kids love baking and you will love it too once you see how happy it makes them.  For some kid-friendly cooking ideas, you can check out this list of tasks kids can help with in the kitchen.

3.  Beach day: Have a beach day with your kids. No one expects you to bring in pounds of sand. But you can have everyone put on their swimsuits and lay out on a beach towel. The kids can even play with toys meant for sand and water. They’ll have a great time pretending to be at the beach.

4.  Have a tea party: Doesn’t rain make you sort of thirsty? Have a tea party with your kids on this rainy spring day. They’ll love sitting down to a pretend party or a real one if you’re up to it.

5.  Build a fort: If you’ve never built a fort with your kids, then you need to. Nothing builds up their childhood imagination more than a fort. They may need some of your creativity, so dig down deep into your childhood memories.

6.  Chalkboard wall: A really fun indoor activity you can do with your kids does take a little beforehand prep. Paint a small or large wall in your home with chalkboard paint. When it’s rainy and your kids are bored, have them write their little hearts out. Kids can get really into this activity and it’s perfect for kids of all ages.  You can grab some chalkboard paint here from Amazon or head to your local hardware store.

7.  Food art: You probably prefer that your kids don't play with their food, but with food art, it’s more than okay. You can do fun things like macaroni art. You can even take fruits and veggies and allow your kids to build different things with their food. All it takes is a little patience and imagination. Or try this fun honey play dough that your kids will love making and playing with (and probably tasting, too, if we're being honest here!).

8.  Bathtub time: Keep in mind that baths are a great way to keep kids occupied for about an hour, but the bathtub can be used for other activities as well. You can let the kids play with messy paint or even cover the bathtub with a piece of plastic and bring sand or dirt indoors. Desperate times always call for desperate measures.

9.  Indoor pool: Again, you’re thinking outside of the box for when your children are trapped indoors. Grab an indoor pool on clearance and blow it up when the time is right. You can put tons of toys inside of it and let the kiddos go crazy. You can also make it an indoor sand pit, just put a tarp below the pool to keep the sand from getting everywhere. Or grab these balls and make a ball pit!

10.  Play on the floor with your kids: Sometimes parents try everything they can to make sure their kids are busy, but a simple way to keep your kids happy when it’s raining outside is to just play on the floor with them. You don’t need anything fancy, just a happy face and smiling kids.

11.  Make it a contest: Kids love contests and anything you can make into a contest. For your fun and sanity on a rainy day, let the contests begin. You can start with seeing who can clean up their room the fastest and then move it to even more fun. See who can find the most change in the house, they get to keep what they find.

12.  Make music: And last, but not least, a fun indoor activity for any family on a rainy spring day is to make music. You don’t need fancy music makers; you can create your own. Use the pots and pans in your house or you can even make your own shakers.

Finding things to do with your kids indoors on a rainy day may seem impossible, but it’s not. Keep this list close, so when you need it, it’s available. Don’t be shy about adding your own activities to this indoor activities list. Share your ideas with me in the comments section!
