This Southwest Taco Burgers Recipe takes our family's favorite homemade taco recipe, and makes it into delicious, juicy hamburgers, topped with amazing toppings like sour cream, pico de gallo, fresh cilantro, or guacamole.
Southwest Taco Burgers Recipe
Our family loves a great Mexican, Tex-Mex meal. It really doesn't get anymore Tex-Mex than these beefy, juicy Southwest Taco Burgers. I decided to make our favorite Taco Recipe grill friendly by making them into burgers. And let me tell you, they are delicious.
I topped my Southwest Taco Burger with sour cream, pico de gallo, and some fresh onions, just like I would top my tacos. It was fabulous, and they are now on our menu for good. The kids loved it too. Some of their favorite foods are tacos and hamburgers, and when you combine them into one fabulous dish? My, oh my. They just couldn't get enough!
These patties are freezer friendly. Just form your patties, and stack them with wax paper between each patty. Then wrap and freeze until you're ready to use.

Southwest Taco Burgers
Ingredients
- 1 ½ pounds ground beef uncooked
- 1 can black beans drained and rinsed
- 1 tablespoon butter or olive oil
- ½ onion chopped
- 3 garlic cloves minced
- 1 teaspoon chili powder
- ¾ teaspoon ground cumin
- ½ teaspoon paprika
- ¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper
- 4-8 hamburger buns
- Optional toppings: cheddar cheese sour cream, pico de gallo, guacamole, onions, cilantro
Instructions
- In a skillet, melt butter over medium heat. Add onions and garlic and saute until onion is translucent, about 2 minutes. Set aside to cool.
- Place ground beef in a large mixing bowl.
- In a separate mixing bowl, mash black beans slightly. They should be smashed but still a little clumpy.
- Combine your spices in a small bowl, stirring to incorporate together.
- Add mashed beans to ground beef, and gently combine with your (washed) hands until incorporated.
- Add cooled onions and garlic and the spice mixture to the ground beef, and combine gently again with your hands until ground beef is coated and everything is combined.
- Divide the meat into 4-8 portions, depending on how big you'd like your burgers.
- Form each portion into a loose ¾ inch patty, and indent the center of each burger with your thumb.
For Grilling
- Heat your grill to high heat.
- Lightly brush each burger with a little oil and cook on the grill for 3-5 minutes on the first side.
- Flip your burgers and cook for an additional 4-5 minutes, adding cheese for the last minute, if desired.
For a Skillet
- Heat about 2 tablespoons of oil in your skillet over high heat until the oil begins to simmer.
- Add burger patties and cook for 3-5 minutes on the first side.
- Flip your burgers and cook for an additional 4-5 minutes, adding cheese for the last minute, if desired.
To Assemble Burgers
- Place each patty between a bun, and dress it up like you would your favorite taco.
