Tips for Teaching Manners to Your Sons
Manners are a big deal, especially when it comes to boys. Naturally, boys are the ones who let out gross sounds and say weird things, right? But it is possible to teach your son manners and here’s how.
6 Tips for Teaching Manners to Your Sons
1. Teach by example
It’s easy to see that all kids learn by example. One of the easiest ways to teach manners to your son is to be a polite person. Saying please and thank you, and being polite to others is something your sons will pick up on. Modeling behavior is the strongest and most effective teaching method there is.
2. Have your sons practice
There is nothing wrong with a little manners practice. Requesting your sons to say please and thank you, while at home is a good thing. This will get them into the habit of being polite when inside the house, and make them more likely to be polite outside of the house.
3. Surround them with other good role models
Boys look up to the male role models around them, so it’s imperative to surround them with good role models in addition to their parents. Friendss, family, dads, uncles, grandpas, teachers. You want your sons to grow up to be men who are respectful and kind hearted, and there's no better way than surrounding your son with men and people that already show those characteristics
4. Talk to them about manners
Another way to teach your boys manners is to just talk about it with them. Tell them when they're being rude (politely, of course). Praise them when they use proper manners without your prompting. They need their mom and dad to explain what manners are. You may have to explain it to your boys more than once, but that’s okay. Kids learn by making mistakes and learning about manners can take some time and personal experience.
5. Be positive when correcting
Many people think that boys are rough and can take being yelled at when they do something wrong, but studies have actually shown the opposite to be true. Take some time to respond positively, or at least gently, when your son doesn’t use his good manners. And be sure to praise them when you notice that they are using good manners.
6. Take a class
Can you believe there are classes out there that teach about manners? Whether you take a local class or throw one together yourself, some boys learn best this way. Giving them scenarios of what it feels like when someone is rude and not polite. Providing something like this to your boys will help them to be more polite, thoughtful, and kind.
