If you love the classic flavors of Chicken Cordon Bleu, then you will love this slow cooker casserole version with the same flavors but way easier to make. By using a slow cooker, you can achieve the same rich, creamy, and cheesy flavors with minimal effort.

Crock Pot Chicken Cordon Bleu is a delicious, easy-to-make meal with tender juicy chicken layered with savory ham and melty, gooey Swiss cheese, all in a creamy sauce and topped with a crumbly herbed topping.

Crock Pot Chicken Cordon Bley is ideal for busy weeknights or when you need a delicious meal with little hands-on time, and is packed with rich, warm, comfort food flavor.

What is Chicken Cordon Bleu?

Chicken Cordon Bleu is a classic dish that originated in Switzerland, consisting of chicken breast that is pounded thin, stuffed with ham and Swiss cheese, then breaded and either fried or baked until golden and crispy. The name "Cordon Bleu" translates to "Blue Ribbon" in French, symbolizing high quality and excellence in cooking.

What's the Difference Between Chicken Kiev and Chicken Cordon Bleu?

While both Chicken Kiev and Chicken Cordon Bleu are stuffed chicken dishes, they have distinct differences:

  • Filling: Chicken Kiev is stuffed with herb-infused garlic butter, while Chicken Cordon Bleu is filled with ham and Swiss cheese.
  • Coating: Both dishes are breaded, but Chicken Kiev is often deep-fried or baked, ensuring a buttery interior, whereas Chicken Cordon Bleu is traditionally baked or pan-fried.
  • Origins: Chicken Kiev has roots in Eastern European cuisine, particularly Russia and Ukraine, whereas Chicken Cordon Bleu is of Swiss origin.
  • Flavor Profile: Chicken Kiev is rich and buttery due to the melted garlic butter inside, while Chicken Cordon Bleu has a savory and cheesy taste from the ham and Swiss cheese combination.

Recipe Variations

  • Different Cheeses: Swap Swiss cheese for provolone, mozzarella, or cheddar for a new flavor twist.
  • Gluten Free: Use gluten free stuffing mix to make this recipe gluten free.
  • Ham: Try turkey or prosciutto instead of ham for a different taste.
  • Low-Carb Option: Skip the stuffing and use crushed pork rinds or almond flour for a keto-friendly version.
  • Herb Infusion: Sprinkle fresh or dried herbs like thyme, parsley, or rosemary into the sauce for added depth.
  • Spicy Kick: Add a pinch of red pepper flakes or a dash of hot sauce to the sauce mixture for some heat.

How to Serve Crock Pot Chicken Cordon Bleu

Crockpot Chicken Cordon Bleu is a hearty and satisfying dish that pairs well with a variety of sides. Serve immediately, while the cheese is still warm and gooey with some of these serving suggestions:

  • Mashed Potatoes: The creamy texture complements the cheesy and savory flavors of the chicken.
  • Steamed Vegetables: Broccoli, green beans, or carrots add a healthy and colorful contrast.
  • Rice or Pasta: Serve over cooked rice or buttered noodles to soak up the flavorful sauce.
  • Crisp Salad: A fresh garden salad with a light vinaigrette balances the richness of the dish.
  • Dinner Rolls: Warm, buttery rolls are perfect for scooping up extra sauce.

Ingredients

  • 2 pounds boneless skinless chicken breast uncooked, cubed
  • 8 ounces ham chopped
  • 8 ounces Swiss cheese shredded, divided
  • 1 can (10.5 ounces) cream of chicken soup
  • ½ cup sour cream
  • ¼ cup milk
  • 2 tablespoons Dijon mustard
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon onion powder
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 box (6 ounces) stuffing mix
  • ¼ cup finely grated Parmesan
  • ⅓ cup butter melted

Instructions

  • Toss chicken, ham, and half the Swiss cheese in the bottom of the slow cooker.
  • In a separate mixing bowl, add cream soup, sour cream, milk, mustard, garlic powder, onion powder, and black pepper and whisk to combine.
  • Pour soup mixture over chicken and spread evenly.
  • Top with remaining Swiss cheese.
  • Cover and cook on LOW for 3-4 hours.
  • About 1 hour before serving, combine stuffing mix, Parmesan, and butter in a medium mixing bowl. Stir to combine. Sprinkle over Swiss cheese in the slow cooker. See cooking note.
  • Serve warm.

Notes

  • Stuffing mixture: You can place the stuffing mixture in before you start cooking for a more hands off recipe, but the stuffing will get very, very soft. The flavor is still delicious, but the texture is a little different. For firmer crumbles, add it an hour before the dish is done cooking.
  • Storage: Store covered in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.

Do you think this could be cooked in a large amount in a slow roaster? If so, how long and what temperature?

Here's what I would change. Use half of the Dijon mustard the recipe calls for. Mix the cream sauce into the chicken and ham and then top with cheese. Use a bit more butter (we used an entire stick) to get a perfect crumb topping with the stuffing mix and parmesan.
