This Homemade Blue Cheese Dressing is creamy, tangy, and loaded with real blue cheese for bold, restaurant-style flavor. Easy to make perfect for salads, wings, and dipping!

Homemade Blue Cheese Dressing

If you love bold, creamy dressings with just the right tang like I do, this Homemade Blue Cheese Dressing is about to become a staple in your kitchen. Itโ€™s rich, flavorful, and has that perfect balance of creamy base and chunky blue cheese that store-bought versions just canโ€™t match.

This version leans into that classic โ€œrestaurant-styleโ€ flavor. Smooth, pourable, and packed with real blue cheese. Whether youโ€™re drizzling it over salads, dunking wings, or using it as a dip for veggies, itโ€™s one of those recipes youโ€™ll keep coming back to again and again.

Why Youโ€™ll Love This Recipe

  • Creamy and chunky texture - Smooth dressing with plenty of real blue cheese crumbles in every bite.
  • Restaurant-style flavor - Tangy, rich, and perfectly balanced.
  • Easy to make - Just whisk and chill. No cooking required.
  • Versatile - Works as both a dressing and a dip.
  • Better than store-bought - Fresher flavor with simple, real ingredients.
  • Make-Ahead Friendly - It tastes even better when you let it chill overnight before serving!

What Blue Cheese to Use

The type of blue cheese you choose can really change the flavor of your dressing, so itโ€™s worth picking one that fits your taste.

  • Mild Blue Cheese (Best for most people) - These are creamy and less pungent, making them perfect for a balanced, crowd-friendly dressing. Great if you want that classic restaurant-style flavor without it being overpowering. Look for โ€œmildโ€ or โ€œcreamyโ€ on the label. Many brands will actually label their blue cheese as mild, creamy, or mellow. Check the color and texture. Milder blue cheeses are usually pale with lighter blue veining and a softer, creamier texture. Stronger varieties tend to be more crumbly with darker, more pronounced blue veins.
  • Gorgonzola (Dolce) - Slightly sweeter and creamier than traditional blue cheese. A great option if you want a smoother, more mellow dressing.
  • Roquefort - Bold, sharp, and salty. This is for true blue cheese lovers who want a strong, tangy kick.
  • Pre-crumbled vs. block - Pre-crumbled works great and is convenient, but buying a wedge and crumbling it yourself will give you better texture and fresher flavor.

If youโ€™re not sure where to start, go with a mild blue cheese or Gorgonzola. Youโ€™ll get great flavor without it being too strong.

Tips & Variations

  • Make it thicker or thinner - Use less buttermilk for a thicker dip, or add a splash more for a pourable dressing consistency.
  • Let it chill - While you can use it right away, letting it sit for at least 8 hours really deepens the flavor. Overnight is even better.
  • Choose your blue cheese - Stronger varieties like Roquefort will give a bolder flavor, while milder blue cheese, like Gorgonzola (Dolce), keeps it more balanced.
  • Adjust the tang - Add a little extra vinegar or a squeeze of lemon juice if you like it sharper.
  • Texture tip - For a smoother dressing, mash some of the blue cheese into the base. For a chunkier dressing, fold it in gently at the end.

How to Use Blue Cheese Dressing

This dressing is incredibly versatile and goes way beyond just salads. I could honestly eat on anything or straight from the jar. That earthiness of the blue cheese combined with the zing of the buttermilk and vinegar get me every time. Try these ideas:

  • Drizzle over wedge salad or classic garden salads
  • Serve with buffalo wings or chicken tenders
  • Use as a dip for fresh veggies like carrots, celery, and cucumbers
  • Spread on burgers or sandwiches for extra flavor
  • Pair with steak or grilled chicken for a rich, tangy finish
  • Add to wraps or grain bowls

Storage

Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 to 7 days. Stir before serving, as it may thicken slightly as it chills.
