Microwave Poached Eggs
While making poached eggs is pretty easy (Don't believe me? Check out this straightforward, easy-to-follow poached egg tutorial and recipe!), this microwave poached eggs version is perfect if you're feeling intimidated by making them the classic way or just don't want to wait for the water to boil!
This microwave version is easy and yields the perfect poached eggs with solid whites and creamy, runny yolks. Perfectly cooked poached eggs that even your kids can make! (Hello, breakfast-in-bed!)
Does the Wattage of My Microwave Matter?
Since the egg is not actually cooking in the microwave, it doesn't matter much. However, different wattage may affect how quickly the water comes to temperature. You need your water close to boiling temperature (212F) to properly cook the egg. You can test this with a candy or meat thermometer.
What Type of Mug Should I Use?
I found that ceramic mugs worked much better than glass measuring cups. The ceramic held in the heat better and allowed the egg to cook without the water cooling too quickly.
Why Can't I Just Put the Egg in the Microwave with the Water?
There are multiple recipes out there where you can actually put the egg right in the water in the microwave to cook it. However, I really don't recommend it for two reasons.
- The eggs explode. I know, this sounds nuts. I didn't believe it either. Until I tried it multiple times and my eggs exploded! You can prevent this by pricking the yolks gently, but that brings me to the second problem.
- The yolks cook. When I pricked the yolks, they would cook all the way through like hard-boiled eggs, every time. Reducing the time did not work because then the whites did not cook through properly.
All of that being said, if you remember to prick your yolk and you don't mind the yolk being fully cooked, they can absolutely just be put in with the water in the mug. (Microwave the water for 1 min. Then add the egg, prick, and cover with a microwave safe plate. Then microwave for an additional 30 to 40 seconds).
But if you'd like a perfectly poached egg with beautiful runny yolks, this recipe is the one!
Why Are My Poached Eggs Slimy?
If your poached eggs are slimy, either the whites are undercooked or they're just wet from being in the water.
If the eggs are slimy because they're undercooked, reheat the water, and cook the egg for longer. If the eggs are simply wet, you can just gently pat them dry.
What to Serve with Microwave Poached Eggs
Poached eggs are delicious by themself with a simple side of buttery toast. Bulk up the meal with some sliced avocado, fruit, or berries.
You can also serve it classically as eggs benedict on an open-face English muffin with Canadian bacon and a very generous drizzle of hollandaise sauce.

Microwave Poached Eggs
Ingredients
- ½ cup water room temperature
- 1 large egg
Instructions
- Crack egg into a small bowl. Set aside. Get out a small plate that you can use as a mug-lid.
- Pour water into a microwave-safe mug or glass measuring cup.
- Place in the microwave for about 6 minutes, until water reaches a low boil.
- Remove from the microwave with oven mitts (it will be HOT!).
- Use a spoon to stir the water in one direction so that it is in motion, like a whirlpool. Stop stirring.
- While the water is in motion, gently slide the egg into the center of moving water. The swirling motion of the water will help prevent the egg white from spreading and will gently wrap the egg yolk.
- Cover the mug and turn off the heat. Let poach for about 5 to 8 minutes.
- Check egg doneness. (Whites should be opaque and yolk should be runny) If the whites are still clear, return the cover, and microwave for an additional 10 to 20 seconds
- Using a spoon, gently lift egg out of the mug and set it on a paper towel to dry delicately.
- Season with salt and pepper, then transfer to your serving plate and enjoy.
Notes
- If your egg whites are separating while being cooked, add a couple drops of vinegar or lemon juice to the water.
- Every microwave is different, so you may need to experiment with cook times to get it perfectly on your specific microwave at home.
- If using a larger mug or cup, you may need more water. You need at least 3 inches of water in the bottom.
- During my testing, classic-sized ceramic mugs worked best as far as the amount of water and insulation for cooking the egg.
