This Homemade Ranch Dip and Dressing is creamy, tangy, and full of classic ranch flavor using simple pantry ingredients. A Midwesterner's runny-ranch dream that's perfect as a dip for veggies and wings or as a dressing for salads, wraps, and more!

Homemade Ranch Dip and Dressing

As a Midwesterner, there are very few condiments that are more important than ranch. Specifically โ€œrunny ranch.โ€ This recipe is the real deal.

This Homemade Ranch Dip and Dressing is creamy, tangy, and packed with classic ranch flavor using simple pantry ingredients. Youโ€™ll find yourself making it on repeat because it works for everything from dipping veggies to drizzling over salads.

Made with buttermilk, sour cream, and mayo, this ranch has that perfect balance of rich and fresh. The dried herbs and seasonings bring that signature ranch taste, but without anything artificial. Just real, simple ingredients you probably already have on hand. Once you try it homemade, itโ€™s hard to go back to store-bought.

Why Youโ€™ll Love This Recipe

  • Rich, creamy texture - Perfect as both a dip and dressing.
  • Simple pantry ingredients - No packets or preservatives.
  • Better than store-bought - Fresh, bold flavor every time.
  • Versatile - Use it for veggies, wings, fries, salads, and more.
  • Make-ahead friendly - Gets even better as it chills.

Tips & Variations

  • Let it chill - Donโ€™t skip the 2-hour refrigeration. This is key for developing that classic ranch flavor.
  • Adjust consistency - Add a splash of buttermilk or olive oil to thin it for dressing, or keep it thick for dipping.
  • Fresh herbs option - Swap dried herbs for fresh if you have them on hand for an even brighter flavor. You need about 1 tablespoon of fresh herbs for every 1 teaspoon dried herbs.
  • Add a squeeze of lemon - For a slightly fresher, tangier finish.
  • Make it lighter - Use Greek yogurt in place of sour cream for a lighter version.

One Swap to Avoid

I highly recommend skipping fresh garlic and using garlic powder in this recipe, and most cold sauce recipes. It blends in more smoothly and gives you that classic ranch flavor people expect from store-bought or restaurant versions.

Fresh garlic, on the other hand, tends to be sharper and more pungent, which can overpower the dressing instead of blending into it. That being said, if you must use fresh, you can use 1 crushed clove in this recipe.

How to Use Ranch Dip and Dressing

This homemade ranch is one of those go-to staples youโ€™ll find yourself using in so many different ways. Whether you keep it thick for dipping or thin it out for drizzling, it works with just about everything.

As a Dip

  • Fresh veggies (carrots, celery, cucumbers, bell peppers, broccoli)
  • Chicken wings or boneless wings
  • Chicken tenders or nuggets
  • French fries or waffle fries
  • Tater tots
  • Onion rings
  • Potato wedges
  • Mozzarella sticks

For Salads

  • Classic garden salad
  • Chicken salad (grilled or crispy chicken)
  • Cobb salad
  • Pasta salad
  • Potato salad
  • Broccoli salad
  • Coleslaw (use in place of dressing for a creamy twist)

On Sandwiches & Wraps

  • Chicken wraps
  • Turkey sandwiches
  • BLTs
  • Burgers
  • Sliders
  • Club sandwiches
  • Veggie wraps

As a Drizzle or Topping

  • Pizza (especially buffalo chicken or veggie pizza)
  • Baked potatoes or loaded potatoes
  • Roasted vegetables
  • Grilled corn
  • Tacos (especially chicken or fish tacos)
  • Nachos
  • Grain bowls or rice bowls

For Cooking & Mixing

  • Mix into shredded chicken for easy ranch chicken
  • Stir into mashed potatoes for extra flavor
  • Add to pasta for a quick creamy ranch pasta
  • Use as a marinade for chicken or pork
  • Toss with roasted or air fryer veggies
  • Mix with buffalo sauce for a buffalo ranch combo
