How to Grow Gorgeous Mums

Mums seem to be the official flower of the fall season, and they have well earned that title with their vibrant colors, hardiness, and of course their warm scent. Mums give us one more chance to enjoy flowers and foliage before winter hits, so this Fall give these tips on how to grow gorgeous mums a try so you can enjoy a some vibrant blooms. Growing prosperous mums can be simple; you just need to know a few tips and tricks. Here is how to get started.

7 Tips to Grow Gorgeous Mums

1. Choose hardy varieties.

You will see two kinds of mums to choose from, hardy mums or florist mums which are typically what you see in bouquets. While florist mums make great cutting flowers, they are not ideal for growing in the yard. Choose hardy mums which fare well in colder weather and extreme weather conditions. While there are many kinds of mums to choose from, look for the word “hardy” in all descriptions and tagging. This way you know you are getting a strong plant.

2. Mums do well in pots.

If you don’t have a sunny spot in your yard or are worried about soil quality, then consider planting in pots. Mums do exceptionally well in clay pots and can easily be brought inside if the weather gets severe. If you are nervous about weather or growing conditions, a clay pot can be your best friend.

3. Choose a starter plant that hasn’t bloomed yet.

When choosing your mums, you want to remember to choose a hardy variety and you also want mums that haven’t bloomed yet. While the full blooming mums look gorgeous, you won’t enjoy continual growth. Instead, choose a plant with closed blooms that still have plenty of life in them.

4. If planting in the ground, choose a spot that gets 6 hours of sun.

Should you decide to add mums to your landscaping, you want to choose a spot that gets at least 6 hours of full sun. Anything less won’t give the plant what it needs for success. While the plant will survive, you won’t get the blooms you would get otherwise.

5. Well drained soil is key.

Mums don’t like wet feet. Be sure you always plant mums in an area that drains well. If planting in pots, make sure the pot has a drainage hole and even some gravel at the base of the pot to help the water move through properly.

6. Clip back at the end of the growing season.

As the growing season ends, cut the stems down to the base. This will help shape them the following year so they come back strong and aren’t tall and flimsy.

7. Remove spent blooms.

One last tip to remember is to always remove dead blooms when you see them. This way the plant isn’t spending its nutrients and energy on trying to revive the bloom and can direct it into other areas of the plant instead.

Enjoy gorgeous mums all season long! When you give these tips for growing gorgeous mums a try, you're sure to get fantastic results and enjoy one last burst of blooms before the snow hits.
