Watermelon Margaritas are the ultimate drink for backyard summer BBQs, poolside lounging, or Taco Tuesday. Made with fresh watermelon and just a few simple ingredients, this cocktail is naturally sweet, fresh, and ridiculously easy to blend up.

Watermelon Margaritas

One of the best parts of summer is sunny days outdoors, snacking on fresh, juicy watermelon. Which is also one of the best parts of these Watermelon Margaritas.

This fun drink is made with real fresh watermelon, and it's a perfect refreshing summer beverage for sipping on your porch. Sweet watermelon and tangy lime come together with tequila and triple sec, with a little swirl of agave syrup for extra sweetness and margarita flavor.

Watermelon margaritas can be served frozen, on the rocks, or even as a mocktail.

I love to serve them with snacks such as fresh homemade salsa or guacamole. Check out all of our Mexican inspired recipes here for more serving inspiration.

How to Salt or Sugar a Glass Rim

The best way to get salt or sugar on your glass rim is to dip it in simple syrup (mix equal parts sugar and hot water. Warm water until sugar is completely dissolved.) Once you dip the rim in the syrup, allow it to dry while you prepare the drinks. Because it will be sticky but no longer wet, the sugar or salt will stick without sliding down the glass.

The easiest way to do it is to simply run a lime wedge around the rim of your glass, then dip in coarse salt or sugar.

Alternately, you can use flavored salt or sugar such as jalapeno salt or even mix Tajin into the salt for added flavor.

Garnishes

If you're making drinks for a party, or just want to feel pretty and fancy, try some of these simple garnishes:

  • Fresh watermelon
  • Fresh summer fruit - such as cherries or strawberries for some extra sweetness and a different flavor
  • Mint leaves - pretty and goes great with watermelon
  • Jalapeno slices - fresh jalapenos for a little heat!

Mocktail Version

To make the same delicious refreshing watermelon margaritas without the alcohol, simply omit the tequila and triple sec. Replace it with water, soda water (flavored or plain), or juice. Milder juices like apple will let the watermelon shine, or you can try a bolder juice for more flavor like orange or pineapple.

More Fun Fruity Drink Recipes You'll Love

  • Berry Spritzer - light, bubbly blend of mixed berries, citrus, and sparkling water. This refreshing spritzer is fruity, fizzy, and perfect for warm-weather sipping.
  • Alabama Slammer - bold Southern cocktail made with amaretto, sloe gin, Southern Comfort, and orange juice. Sweet, smooth, and a retro favorite for a reason!
  • Blackberry Lemon Spritzer - fresh blackberries and tart lemon come together in this crisp, sparkling drink. A sweet-tart combo thatโ€™s fruity, fizzy, and totally sippable.
  • Earl Grey Spritzer - elegant spritzer combines brewed Earl Grey tea, citrus, and sparkling water. Lightly floral and perfectly refreshing with a hint of sophistication.

Ingredients

  • 2ยฝ cups watermelon juice
  • ยฝ cup tequila (8 ounces)
  • ยผ cup triple sec
  • โ…“ cup fresh lime juice
  • 1 to 2 tablespoons agave syrup
  • Ice for shaking and serving
  • 1 cup coarse salt for rims
  • Limes for garnish

Instructions

  • Pack a large blender full of cubed ripe watermelon (with or without seeds) and blend until you have a juice. One small watermelon should yield roughly 3-5 cups, so you will have leftover juice for extra margaritas. Strain the juice for pulp and seeds if desired.
***If making frozen margaritas, pour 2ยฝ cups watermelon juice and place in the freezer until frozen.***
  • To prepare glasses, pour some margarita salt on a plate. Cut a lime into wedges and rub the wet part against the rim of the glass in a circular motion. Then dip the cup upside down onto the salt and press down, moving slowly to ensure all sides are covered. Set aside until ready for use.
  • In a large pitcher, mix 2ยฝ cups watermelon juice with tequila, triple sec, lime juice, and agave. Stir until combined.
***If making frozen margaritas, add watermelon ice cubes with remaining ingredients into a blender, and blend until combined.***
  • Pour into salted rim glass and serve with lime.

Notes

Storage: Watermelon margaritas are best served immediately. However, leftovers can be saved in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Shake well before serving, as the watermelon may separate to the bottom.
If making ahead for a party, blend and chill, then stir well before serving.
