Crockpot Split Pea Soup

Crockpot Split Pea Soup is a timeless classic that's hearty, nutritious, and comforting. It has a thick, velvety texture, and split peas give it a buttery, rich flavor, combined with aromatic onions, garlic, and herbs and smoky, savory ham. Simmering it in the slow cooker allows all of the flavors to marry into one comforting, hearty experience with each spoonful.

It's packed with flavor and nutrition, and is effortless to make. The slow cooker does all the work for you. Just add the ingredients and let it simmer to perfection.

Made with simple ingredients like dried split peas, vegetables, and a ham hock or bacon, this soup is easy on the wallet. Plus, Crockpot split pea soup is a nutrition powerhouse, packed with vegetarian protein and healthy fiber, making it a great choice for both health and your wallet!

Crock pot split pea soup is a simple yet satisfying meal that’s perfect for any occasion. With minimal effort and maximum flavor, it’s a recipe you’ll want to make again and again. Give this classic dish a try and enjoy the warm, comforting goodness it brings to your table.

Do You Need to Soak Split Peas for Soup?

For this recipe, I do, very briefly. No need to do it overnight. They'll just sit in hot water while you prepare the remaining ingredients.

Crockpot Split Pea Soup Variations

Crock pot split pea soup is a versatile dish that can be adapted to suit different tastes and dietary needs. Here are some ideas:

  • Vegetarian: Skip the ham and use vegetable broth. Add smoked paprika or a few drops of liquid smoke for a smoky flavor.
  • Bacon: Use thick-cut bacon instead of ham for a similar flavor if you don't have ham on hand. You can also fry up some crispy bacon and crumble it on top for serving.
  • Spicy Kick: Stir in chopped jalapeños, a pinch of red pepper flakes, or a few dashes of hot sauce like Tabasco for a hint of heat.
  • Bone Broth: Using bone broth will increase the protein in just one little step without affecting the flavor.
  • Blended: This soup can be blended for a creamier more velvety texture.
  • Extra Protein: Add cooked and diced smoked sausage, shredded chicken, or even turkey bacon. This can be added at the beginning to cook in with the soup, or stirred in closer to the end, 30 minutes before it's done.
  • Creamy Variation: Stir in coconut milk, heavy cream, or a dollop of sour cream for added richness.

How to Serve Crockpot Split Pea Soup

Split pea soup is a hearty meal on its own, but the right accompaniments can elevate the experience. I like to serve it with a nice warm crusty bread and fresh green salad. Here are some more ideas:

  • Crusty Bread: Serve with a warm, buttery, crusty baguette or sourdough bread for dipping.
  • Crackers or Croutons: Top with buttery crackers, crisp flatbreads, or your favorite seasoned croutons for added crunch.
  • Salad: Pair with a light green salad dressed with vinaigrette to balance the richness of the soup.
  • Cheese: Garnish with shredded Parmesan or crumbled feta or goat cheese for a burst of nutty creamy flavor.
  • Herbs: Sprinkle fresh parsley, chives, or thyme on top for a fresh, vibrant finish.
  • Yogurt or Sour Cream: A dollop of Greek yogurt or sour cream can add tanginess and creaminess.
