What Is Tuna Macaroni Salad?
Tuna macaroni salad is a classic American deli-style pasta salad made with cooked macaroni, canned tuna, and a creamy mayonnaise-based dressing. Itโs typically mixed with crunchy vegetables like celery and onion, along with add-ins like eggs and peas for extra flavor and texture.
Itโs served cold, making it perfect for picnics, potlucks, BBQs, summer dinners, and make-ahead meals.
Why Youโll Love It
- Creamy & comforting - Rich, tangy dressing coats every bite.
- Budget-friendly - Made with simple, affordable pantry staples.
- Great for make-ahead - Tastes even better after chilling.
- Protein-packed - Tuna and eggs make it more filling than most pasta salads.
- Perfect for gatherings - Easy to double and always a crowd favorite.
Tips & Variations
- Donโt overcook the pasta: Cook just to al dente so it holds up after mixing and chilling.
- Rinse the pasta: Cooling it quickly stops cooking and keeps the salad from getting sticky.
- Drain tuna well: Too much liquid can make the salad watery.
- Milder onion flavor: Rinse chopped red onion under cold water to reduce sharpness.
- Make it extra creamy: Add an extra spoonful or two of mayo or olive oil before serving if it seems dry after chilling.
- Add crunch: Stir in diced bell peppers, shredded carrots, or any other veggies you love.
- Up the fiber: This is one of my favorite variations, add a (drained and rinsed) can of white beans or lentils to increase both fiber and protein.
- Boost flavor: Try a little Dijon mustard or a pinch of paprika in the dressing.
- Lighten it up: Replace part of the mayo with plain Greek yogurt.

How to Serve
Tuna macaroni salad is best served cold, straight from the fridge after itโs had time to chill and the flavors have melded together.
Serve it alongside classic cookout favorites like grilled burgers, hot dogs, BBQ chicken, pulled pork, or sandwiches. It also works great as a light main dish for lunch, especially when paired with crackers, fresh fruit, or a simple green salad.
For gatherings, itโs an easy, no-fuss side that can be made ahead and pulled out right when you need it.

Notes
- Storage: Store tuna macaroni salad in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days. If it dries out slightly after sitting, just stir in a little extra mayo or olive oil before serving to refresh the texture.
- Make Ahead: This is an ideal make-ahead recipe. Prepare it up to a day in advance and let it chill in the fridge. The extra time allows the flavors to develop and makes it even more delicious.
- Celery: If I don't have fresh celery on hand, I will often double the celery seed, and it works in a pinch! Alternately, you can omit celery seed if you have fresh celery, as the fresh will give it flavor on its own, as well.
- Gluten Free: Use gluten free pasta to make this salad gluten free.
