Homemade Buffalo Sauce

Spicy, tangy Homemade Buffalo Sauce is super simple to make with just a few pantry ingredients, packed with flavor, and perfect for dipping, dunking, and drizzling on everything! Plus, you can control the heat to suit your taste buds.

Whether you're prepping for game day or just adding some bold pizzazz to your meals, this quick homemade buffalo sauce recipe is a keeper!

What is Buffalo Sauce?

Buffalo sauce is named for its birthplace: Buffalo, New York.

It is a rich, tangy, spicy sauce that's made from cayenne pepper hot sauce, butter, vinegar, and spices. This rich combination produces a creamy, spicy sauce that's perfect for sticking to chicken wings and keeps you coming back for more!

What's the Difference Between Buffalo and Hot Sauce?

Buffalo sauce uses hot sauce to get part of its signature flavor, but it also uses butter to add richness and creaminess and help it stick to wings better, as well as extra vinegar for a little extra tang.

What Kind of Hot Sauce Should I Use?

You can use any kind of cayenne pepper hot sauce. I recommend using Frank's Hot Sauce, as it is mild and easy to find. The mildness allows you to adjust the heat to your own preferences by adding more tabasco or cayenne.

How to Make Homemade Buffalo Sauce Spicier

The key to make the buffalo sauce hot or not is all in the Tabasco for this recipe. Just a few dashes will amp up the heat quite a bit. I typically use about 3 or 4 shakes. Add a few shakes, stir, and then taste to test whether you've reached your desired spiciness.

What to Make with Homemade Buffalo Sauce

The most obvious option is wings, such as these easy and crispy air fryer chicken wings! Here are some other creative options:

  • Buffalo Chicken Dip
  • Macaroni and Cheese
  • Wraps
  • Buffalo Chicken Salad
  • French Fries
  • Pizza
  • Veggies
  • Nachos
  • Chicken Tenders
  • Chicken or Egg Salad
  • Burgers
  • Scrambled or Fried Eggs or Omelettes

  • Homemade Ranch Dressing and Dip - When you're done tossing those chicken wings in the perfect buffalo sauce, dunk them in this creamy, tangy homemade ranch.
  • Homemade Buttermilk Blue Cheese Dressing - Blue cheese and Buffalo is one of my all time flavor combinations. This dressing is chunky, tangy, savory, and creamy. Plus it's very easy to make!
  • Romesco Sauce - a bold, smoky Spanish sauce made with roasted tomatoes and peppers.
  • Remoulade Sauce - a creamy, spicy sauce that's traditionally served with seafood, but makes a delicious dip for pretty much anything fried.
  • Homemade Honey Mustard Dressing and Dip - Creamy, sweet, and tangy, this homemade sauce is perfect for dipping and drizzling.
