Collage with two oven fried catfish filets on a plate next to coleslaw and lemon wedges on top, an oven fried catfish filet on a baking sheet with parchment paper on bottom, and the words "oven fried catfish" in the center.

Oven-fried Catfish is a healthier twist on the classic, with tender, flaky fillets coated in a crispy seasoned cornmeal that's baked to golden perfection. Just a few simple ingredients and 30 minutes make a satisfying Southern meal!

Southern Oven Fried Catfish

Southern Oven Fried Catfish is crispy on the outside, tender and flaky on the inside, and bursting with flavor.

Traditional deep-fried catfish is undeniably delicious, but it often comes with a heavy dose of grease and extra calories. Oven-frying provides a lighter alternative while still delivering that crave-worthy crunch. Plus, it’s easier to prepare and clean up, making it a win-win for busy cooks. It’s a Southern staple made incredibly easy with just a few simple ingredients, no messy oil, and 30 minutes.

This recipe delivers all the crunch and zest you love from traditional fried catfish, minus the guilt.

Don't You Need Flour?

Nope, while the common method of flour dredging, egg wash, and cornmeal coating is typically used, I tested this method with baking alongside my own cornmeal-only version, and cornmeal-only won by far.

The flour dredging made the coating come easily off the fish after baking. Plus, it wasn't as crispy as my method, and it was way more messy.

How Do You Know When Catfish is Done?

The best way to know your catfish is done is when the crust turns golden and crispy, and the fish easily flakes apart with a fork.

Recipe Variations and Substitutions

  • Cooking Method: I have similar delicious recipes for pan-fried and air-fried catfish, as well as deep fried, air fried, or baked catfish nuggets!
  • Different Fish Options: While catfish is traditional, you can substitute it with tilapia, cod, or haddock for a similar texture and flavor profile.
  • Lemon Pepper: Change up the flavor with a fresh and zesty lemon pepper in this baked lemon pepper catfish recipe.
  • Spice It Up: Add a couple extra shakes of cayenne pepper to the seasoning to increase the heat level
  • Cornmeal: Use breadcrumbs and parmesan instead of cornmeal for a different kind of crunch.

What to Serve with Southern Oven Fried Catfish

Southern oven-fried catfish pairs beautifully with a variety of sides and sauces that elevate its flavor. Here are some ideas for serving:

  • Classic Southern Sides: Serve your catfish with traditional Southern staples like creamy coleslaw, buttery cornbread, collard greens, potato salad, or black-eyed peas. These sides complement the crispy fish and add richness to the meal.
  • Fresh and Light: For a lighter option, pair the catfish with a crisp green salad, roasted vegetables, sauteed green beans, or air fryer asparagus for a refreshing contrast.
  • Dipping Sauces: Offer tartar sauce, remoulade, or, my kids' favorite, ketchup for dipping. Lemon wedges and hot sauce are also essential accompaniments for an authentic Southern experience.
  • Grains and Starches: Mashed potatoes, dirty rice, cheesy grits, or fries make hearty additions that round out the meal.
  • Sandwich: Transform your oven-fried catfish into a sandwich by serving it on a toasted bun with lettuce, tomato, pickled onions, and a dollop of remoulade.

Whatever you choose, make sure to serve the catfish hot and crispy straight from the oven for the best flavor and texture.
